Winter Wine Exploration Series
January 10th & 11th- Aging Red Wine- Miracle or Matter of Taste
We grow three red varieties of grapes: Cab Franc, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon. We will be tasting samples of each of these varieties as they have just gone into barrels. And then we will be tasting finished wines from several vintages, so you can see how our reds develop from their original state.
January 24th & 25th- Library Reds and Whites
Every year, we save several cases of each wine we make and set them aside in our “Library.” During this session, we will be opening five whites and five reds that were stored in our “Library” from past years, starting in 2011. Join us for some pleasant and maybe some unpleasant surprises.
February 7th & 8th- Finger Lakes vs. France
It turns out that we grow many of the same grapes here in the Finger Lakes that are also grown in France. They include Chardonnay, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cab Franc. We will be selecting wines from the cooler regions of France and comparing them to wines from the Finger Lakes made from the same grapes.
February 28th & Mar 1st- Cab Francs of the World
When people think of red wine from New York, we want them to think of Cab Franc. But we should also ask, “How do Cab Francs from New York compare to Cab Francs from other parts of the world? In this session, we will be tasting five Cab Francs and five from other parts of the world.
March 14th & 15th- Blind Tasting: Red, White, Orange, Rosé
We start by tasting distinctive wines of each type. What makes a red wine distinctive? What makes a white wine distinctive? If you had a blindfold on, what should your nose and taste buds look for? Then we pour four wines into opaque, black glasses and ask you to taste them without looking. How hard—or easy—is it to tell the difference, now that you have been trained?
